The Wharton School has several Unix host computer systems available for remote access. The names of these systems are:

  • Individual Student Websites: students.wharton.upenn.edu
  • Club Websites: clubs.wharton.upenn.edu

Usually access to these systems is made via web browser, but in some cases you may need to connect directly to these systems using a command-line interface in order to run certain specialized software or to make changes to your Wharton account. You will need to use a "secure shell" UNIX program such as SSH to do so.

To access a Wharton host system, you need to have an account on that system. When you began your Wharton education you were given a designated amount of space on one of these host computer systems (eg: 50 MB on Students). However if you find that you do not have a host system account, they are available from Wharton's Accounts Coordinator in F35 Jon M. Huntsman Hall. For questions or more information, contact Wharton's Computer Consultants at 215/898-8600.

For instructions on logging on from home, read the section below. For instructions on logging on from a Wharton workstation, read Connecting and Logging on from a Wharton Workstation.

Connecting and Logging On From Home
  • If you're working from home, you'll need to obtain SSH by clicking here and then install the client.
  • Once you've installed the software, make sure you have an active connection to your ISP and then go to the Start menu on your Desktop then All Programs, then SSH Secure Shell, and finally select Secure File Transfer Client.
  • Press the Quick Connect button.
  • Enter the host name and your Wharton username. If you are an undergraduate or an MBA student, enter 'students' for the host name.  If you a PhD student, enter 'assets'.

  • Click Connect.
  • The first time you log into the UNIX server, SSH will display this window to ask you if you want to save the host key.   Select YES.

  • Enter your password when prompted.
  • To save the connection, enter "WhartonUNIX" for the file name and click "Add to Profiles".  This window will automatically pop up when you log in.

  • Don't forget to log out of your host system when you're finished
Connecting and Logging on from a Wharton Workstation
  • From the Start menu on the Desktop select Programs and then SSH.
  • Select Connect from the File menu.
  • A window with a list of hosts will appear. Select your host and click Connect. (see above picture for if you are unsure about your host system).
  • Enter your Wharton username and password when prompted.
  • Don't forget to log out of your host system when you're finished.
Checking your quota using SSH
  • Once you have connected to your UNIX account you will first need to need to go to your main prompt (i.e. students(~)%)
  • At the UNIX prompt enter: quota
  • Your allotted disk space is listed under quota while your disk usage is listed under usage
Logging Out
  • Log out of your host system by typing logout at the system prompt (usually indicated by % or $).
  • Exit SSH by choosing Exit from the File menu.
  • If you're working at a Wharton workstation and are finished, don't forget to log out of the workstation before you leave.
