PENNKEY - THE UNIVERSITY AUTHENTICATION SYSTEM
The University's authentication system is known as "PennKey" (http://www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey).
PennKey is seperate from your Wharton account. Your Wharton account is the authentication system used to access all Wharton applications and services.
However, to access the University applications and services, a PennKey is required.
Wharton students will need a PennKey login and password for:
- Wharton's Wireless Network and Penn's Wireless Network
- Penn Portal
- Downloading supported software from Penn's computing website (http://www.upenn.edu/computing/product/)
- PennIn Touch
- Blackboard
- U@Penn
PennKey is becoming the standard for authentication at the University, therefore more and more applications will require it. For a complete list of University applications currently using PennKey, visit the PennKey web site
(http://www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey/lsp/chart.html).
How to obtain a PennKey
If you have never registered for a PennKey username and password, or if you forget your PennKey password, you will need to obtain a PIN number to get your PennKey information.
Note: Once you obtain a PIN number, your current PennKey information will be disabled until you reset your password.
There are three ways to obtain a PIN:
- Pick up a PIN number from the Registrar's office
If you are on campus regularly, pick up a PIN number by stopping by the Registrar's
Office at:
221 Franklin Building
3451 Walnut Street
Mon, 10am– 5pm; Tue-Fri, 9am– 5pm
To confirm your identity, bring two forms of photo ID, one of which should be your PennCard. Other acceptable forms of photo ID are government-issued documents such as passport, state driver's license, state-issued ID card, or national identity card.
- Obtain a PIN Number through the Mail
If you are not on campus regularly, you'll need to request your PIN (Personal
Identification Number) by calling the 24-hour PIN Request Voicemail Line at 215-746-PKEY (215-746-7539). For security purposes, you will be asked to provide your:
* Social Security Number
* PennID number (the middle 8-digit sequence of numbers on your PennCard)
* Date of Birth.
You'll also be asked to leave a phone number where you can be reached. The PIN letter will be
sent via U.S. Mail the following business day to your address on record with the University. Please allow 4-5 business days for the letter to arrive.
- Challenge-Response Option
If you previously registered for your PennKey you may have opted to participate in the "Challenge-Response" option.
If you did, in order to reset your password, go to the the PennKey Challenge-Response Generator website at:
https://galaxy.isc-seo.upenn.edu:7778/pls/com8i/Challenge_Controller_pg.Start_Challenge
Once there, verify your identity by supplying the last 4 digits of your Social
Security number, your date of birth and your Penn ID number. After filling out
that information, click Continue. Next, you will be prompted to answer the 3
Challenge-Response questions that you originally set up.
After you answer those questions correctly, you will be issued a PIN number immediately
online so that you can reset your password.
After you have obtained your PIN number:
Use that PIN number to register for your PennKey or reset your PennKey password at:
https://rosetta.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/register_pennkey/register.
Note: If you are registering for your PennKey for the first time, please see the section below entitled "Participating in the Challenge-Response Option" before beginning the registration process.
Participating in the Challenge-Response Option
When you initially register for your PennKey or if you already have your PennKey username and password, you can choose to participate in the "Challenge-Response" option.
This option will use 3 questions to allow you to obtain a PIN number immediately online so that you can reset your password in the event you forget it. Challenge-Response is a good choice for anyone who travels frequently, is away from campus,
or thinks they are likely to forget their password.
To set up the Challenge-Response option please select from one of the following:
- When Initially Registering for a PennKey
If you are registering for a PennKey for the first time, while going through the steps to register,
you will be asked if you would like to opt to use the Challenge-Response.
- If you already have a PennKey
You can setup the Challenge-Response option by going to the following website:
