Managing your Quota

You are given a certain amount of space on the server for your account. This limit is sometimes referred to as your account usage or "quota." Everything you put in your account counts toward that limit. This includes e-mail, e-mail attachments, home pages, and files you transfer into your account.

Email Quota Limits for Students

Outlook Live (for MBA '11 and UGR '13)

If you are an MBA (Class of '10) or Undergraduate (Classes of '10, '11 and '12) student, your email account quota limits are as follows:

  • 1GB: At 1gb, a warning message will be sent out reminding you that have exceeded your quota. This message will continue to be sent out on a regular basis until you have reduced your quota.
  • 1.15GB: When your email account exceeds 1.15gb in size, you will no longer be able to send email until the quota has been reduced.
  • 1.25GB: When your email account quota exceeds 1.25gb, you will not be able to send or receive email until the quota is reduced.
Note: For tips on how to reduce your email account's quota, please see the section below entitled Tips on Reducing Your Email Account Quota.

Checking your email quota usage.

There are a few options for checking your quota usage. There are as follows:

  • Check your email quota using SPIKE.
To check your quota using SPIKE, click on the My Account tab. In the Email Information section, the amount of disk space you are using will be displayed. To view the details of the amount of space each folder in your account is using, you will need to use Webmail or Outlook (directions provided below).
  • Check your email quota using Webmail Mail
    • If you move your mouse pointer onto the 'Outlook Today [Mailbox - lastname, firstname] option in your folder list, a popup window will appear displaying your quota usage..
  • Check your email quota using Microsoft Outlook.

    • On the General tab, click on Folder Size... You'll see a breakdown of your server folders and their sizes.
    • Click Close and OK when you're done.

Tips for Reducing Your Email Account's Quota

There are several steps you can take to reduce your email account quota. They include:

  • Deleting email in your Deleted Items folder. The deleted items folder is often overlooked and can take up a large amount of space in your email account if it is not regularly emptied.
  • Regularly clean out your Sent Items folder. Any email that you send is saved in your Sent Items folder. If you keep every message you send, over time this can take up alot of your quota. So, make sure to delete any email in your Sent Items folder that you do not need.
  • Save important messages in a personal folder instead of in your email account. If there are messages that you would like to hold on to, consider moving them to a personal folder that is stored locally on your computer. Once the email is moved out of your email account and into that personal folder, it no longer takes up space in your Wharton email account. For information on how to create personal folders, please see our website at: Creating Personal Folders in Microsoft Outlook 2007 or 2003.
