Configuring Outlook Express

You can use Outlook Express to read your regular Wharton e-mail. Outlook Express does not include the calendaring, tasks, and groupware features of Microsoft Outlook, but it launches much more quickly. It can be handy to quickly check your e-mail.

Configuring Outlook Express for Wharton E-mail

  • Launch Outlook Express.
Note: If you receive a message at the start-up of the software, see the section Trouble-shooting Start-up Messages.
  • Ensure that the Internet Connection Wizard window is open.
If the Internet Connection Wizard does not launch, open it by going to the Tools menu, select Accounts, click the Add button, and select Mail from the menu.
  • For the Display Name, enter your personal name and click Next.
  • In the Internet E-mail Address window, enter your Wharton e-mail address into the E-Mail Address field.
Note: You can use either your lifelong e-mail address (ex: joe.wharton.wg09@wharton.upenn.edu) or the shorter address consisting of your user name followed by @wharton.upenn.edu (ex: josephw@wharton.upenn.edu). Click the Next button to continue.
  • In the E-mail Server Names box, enter the following:
    • For your incoming mail server, select IMAP in the drop-down box.
    • For Incoming mail (IMAP) server enter owa.wharton.upenn.edu .

Note: Your Wharton user name is the one you received when you first got your account (it's typically 8 characters based on your name, such as josephw). [If you're sure that you are the only person that will be accessing your computer system, you can leave the Remember password checkbox selected.] Click the Next button to continue.
  • Click Finish on the final Congratulations screen.

If you see the message: "Would you like to view a list of available folders now?", click Yes to see the folders list. For " Show/Hide IMAP Folders" simply click OK to accept the default settings.

Disable Exchange Auto Protect Mode In Symantec Anti-Virus

If you use Symantec Anti-Virus to protect your computer from viruses, you will need to make one settings change in order to send email through Outlook Express. To make this change, do the following:

  • Launch Symantec Antivirus by clicking on the Start button and selecting Symantec Client Security and then Symantec Antivirus in the list of programs.
  • From Symantec's Configure menu, select Microsoft Exchange Auto-Protect.
  • Make sure the setting Enable Microsoft Exchange Auto-Protect is unchecked.
  • Click the ok button to close the Microsoft Exchange Auto-Protect window and click the Exit button to close the Symantec Antivirus program.
Note: The Wharton Exchange server, Key, is equipped with antivirus software that automatically scan your email messages for viruses. Therefore, disabling this setting in Symantec will not make you vulnerable to viruses in your Wharton email.
