Penn's Wireless Network

Penn's Wireless Network (AirPennNet) provides students with easy access to the wireless network all across campus. AirPennNet gives you high speed access to the Internet from your own laptop, notebook computer or wireless handheld device. Penn's AirPennNet wireless network is available in Jon M. Huntsman Hall and several areas around Penn's campus.

AirPennNet vs. AirPennNet Guest: Which One Should You Use?

The wireless network in JMHH has two levels of service, AirPennNet and AirPennNet-Guest.

AirPennNet - * Wharton Students should use this Wireless network*

More secure and robust, AirPennNet is designed to meet the connectivity needs of Wharton students. This level of service is available for students, faculty and staff using PennKey authentication. Installation and configuration instructions are listed below.

AirPennNet-Guest - *Not recommended for Wharton Students*

The AirPennNet-Guest service is a limited-use network for visitors or those with devices not capable of supporting the 802.1x protocol (including some PDA devices and older laptops).  Users must register themselves on this network every Monday; however, it does not require any configuration because it is an open network with limited bandwidth and no encryption.  The AirPennNet-Guest service is NOT recommended for students who want to connect to the wireless network because it is not designed to meet the connectivity and security needs of most students. Most areas on campus have limited number of IP addresse available for AirPennNet-Guest and you may be unable to connect during busy times. For more information on this service please see http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/airpennnet/apn_guest.html

Accessing the AirPennNet Wireless Network

There is no preregistration needed to access the AirPennNet wireless network. With a few configuration steps, you will be able to connect to it. The configuration steps for Windows users are as follows:

  • Download and configure Secure W2 from Penn's website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/product/specs/securew2.html.
Note: During the Secure W2 configuration steps, an authentication box will appear asking for your username and password. You should enter your Pennkey information and leave the Domain field blank.
  • After completing the Secure W2 configuration, reboot your computer.

Macintosh Computer Users: Macintosh users do not need to download the Secure W2 client. All that is required to access AirPennNet is to configure your computer for 802.1X authentication. For information on how to do this, please see Penn's computing website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/configure/index.html/

iPhone 3G Users: Macintosh iPhone 3G users can configure their phone to access AirPennet. Information on this can be found at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/provider/pda/iphone/iphoneairpennnet.html

For more information on the AirPennNet wireless network, please visit the Penn computing website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/
