Smartphone Buying and Configuration Guide

This guide will help you choose a Smartphone that is compatible with Wharton's current email environment. After reading this guide, you should be able to purchase a mobile device, configure it to work with your Wharton email account and satisfy your other mobile computing needs.

Steps for Purchasing a Smartphone

  1. Choosing the right device
    There is a vast selection of Smartphones to choose from, limited only by those that your cell phone carrier provides. Before purchasing a device, we recommend you review websites online to see the kind of user rating that the device gets. A bad or good review could help you determine which device is right for you.
  2. Choosing the correct data plan
    To access your Wharton email account on your phone you will need to purchase a data plan. We recommend that you speak with your cell phone provider about the types of data plans they offer in order to decide what would best fit your needs. Normal user activity involves:
    • sending and receiving email
    • web browsing
    • calendaring- scheduling and accepting appointments

Smartphone Devices that will best work with your Wharton email account

Wharton Computing does not recommend one specific type of Smartphone device. However, the guidelines listed below should help you determine which type of device will best suit your needs.

Note: When purchasing a Smartphone, please be aware that you need to purchase a data plan in order to retrieve your Wharton email account wirelessly if your Smartphone does not have a wireless card. Please speak with your phone provider about the data plans they provide.


iPhone


The iPhone 3G and the previous generation iPhone with OS v2.0 can be synchronized with email, calendar, and contacts items connected with your Wharton account. iPhones can also connect to Penn’s wireless network for Internet connectivity.

Blackberry

Wharton supports Blackberry Enterprise services for students.  The Wharton Blackberry Enterprise Service provides you with "push-based" wireless synchronization for email, calendar and contacts from Wharton Exchange Accounts.  It is only open to full time Wharton students who have a Blackberry and an enterprise-level data plan.  You should check with your service provider to determine if you current plan covers Enterprise activation.  If you don’t, you’ll need to upgrade your plan in order to utilize our Enterprise Server.

If your service plan does not cover Enterprise activation, and you don’t wish to upgrade your plan, you should be able to get your Wharton email. Most Blackberry service providers have "push mail technology" available which allows users to push their Wharton email to their Blackberry device wirelessly. Before purchasing your Blackberry device, you should contact your service provider to see if this service is available. Email is the only service that can be synced wirelessly. To sync your Wharton Contacts, Calendar and Tasks with your Blackberry, you will have to directly attach it to your computer and sync it with Outlook.

Windows Mobile Devices

Windows Mobile Smartphones can sync completely with your Wharton account content. The email software included with Windows Mobile devices is Outlook Mobile. Using Outlook Mobile and the Microsoft Activesync software, you will be able to sync your Wharton account email, calendar, contacts and tasks associated with your Wharton account wirelessly.
