Pass/Fail: Declaration of Grading Status

The faculty has allowed students to take some elective coursework on a pass/fail basis. Each faculty member determines whether or not the course can be taken on this basis. The grading option can be selected either during the course registration auction or, for a limited period of time, after the close of auction (the declaration deadline is published in auction closing messages).

The following are the policies governing the pass/fail option:

  • You may take up to 1cu of elective coursework per semester on a pass/fail basis (this does not include MGMT656-Global Immersion Program or MGMT891-Curricular Practical Training).
  • The instructor is not notified as to who is taking a course on a pass/fail basis.
  • Once the deadline for the declaration has passed, the decision to take a course on a pass/fail basis is final. The declaration deadlines for Fall are:
    • Full semester and Q1 courses: Monday, September 22.
    • Q2 courses: Thursday, November 13.
  • A pass is not counted toward your GPA for the purpose of honors. A fail is counted as an F grade and will be counted toward the GPA. Students with grades of F are ineligible for First Year Honors, Graduation with Honors, Palmer Scholar, or for Director’s List in the term in which the F is earned.

The following table indicates whether or not courses taken on a pass/fail basis can count toward fulfillment of the major. Once the course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis, that grade type cannot be reversed. Thus, should you change majors to one that does not accept courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis, you cannot count that course toward the major.
