Examples:
A. Dropping a closed course after the auction has ended
A student successfully bid in round 5 of the auction for LGST806: Negotiations and paid a clearing price of 13,582 points. In the second week of the semester the student comes to the MBA Program Office to drop the course. The process is as follows:
1. Forfeiture of the 13,582 points bid for the course.
2. Assessment of 350 point penalty (since it is a full 1.0cu course)
because the student held the seat and then released it post-auction,
thereby withholding it from a classmate during the auction.
3. No replenishment for the course (because the student will not
complete it).
4. Written permission from the instructor is required to drop the
course (entirely at faculty discretion).
5. Grade of 'W' posted to the transcript.
B. Adding a closed course after the auction has ended
A student repeatedly and unsuccessfully bid for LGST806: Negotiations throughout the auction. In round 8 the student makes a final and also unsuccessful attempt with a bid of 6022 points. Based on the round 8 bid, the student now appears on a ranked waitlist for the course and is first on that list (was the highest unsuccessful bidder in round 8 for the course). In the second week of the semester if a registered student drops LGST806, the MBA Program Office contacts the student with the bid of 6022 and offers the seat. The process is as follows:
1. The price paid will be that student's bid amount in round 8
(6022 points).
2. There is no point penalty since the student did not disadvantage
anyone.
3. Standard point replenishment for the course (1000 points for
1.0cu course) is earned because the student will be completing the
course.
4. Written permission from the instructor is required to add the
course (entirely at faculty discretion).
C. Swapping a closed section for a closed section of the same course
A student successfully bid in round 5 of the auction for LGST806: Negotiations and paid a clearing price of 13,582 points. In the second week of the semester the student comes to the MBA Program Office to confess that there is a time conflict between LGST806 and another course on the student's schedule. Time conflicts are not permitted, however the student states that the LGST806 instructor will permit him to sit in on an alternate section of the course. The alternate section was closed at the end of the auction. The Weighted Average Price (WAP) for the alternate section of LGST806 is 17,094 points. The process is as follows:
1. The price paid will be the larger of the original price paid
or the WAP for the destination section at the end of the auction.
In this case, the price would be 17,094 points. The student would
have to pay the difference between the original price and the WAP
of the destination section at the end of the auction.
2. Assessment of 350 point penalty (since it is a full 1.0cu course)
because the student held the seat and then released it post-auction,
thereby withholding it from a classmate. Furthermore, the student
did not resolve the conflict during the auction.
3. Forfeiture of replenishment for the course.
4. Written permission from the instructor is required to switch
sections in the course (entirely at faculty discretion).
5. If the student does not have an auction point balance of at least
3862* points at the time of the request, the request would be denied.
*17,094 pts - 13,582 pts + 350 pt penalty = 3862 pts
D. Swapping a closed section for an open section of the same course
A student successfully bid in round 5 of the auction for LGST806: Negotiations and paid a clearing price of 13,582 points. In the second week of the semester the student comes to the MBA Program Office to confess that there is a time conflict between LGST806 and another course on the student's schedule. Time conflicts are not permitted, however the student states that a different professor teaching an alternate section of the same course will permit her to sit in on the section. The alternate section did not close in the final round of the auction, so seats are currently available and the last round clearing price was zero. The process is as follows:
1. The price paid will be the larger of the original price paid
or the last clearing price of the destination section. In this case
the price would be 13,582 points (the original bid amount).
2. Assessment of 350* point penalty (since it is a full 1.0cu course)
because the student held a seat in the closed section and then released
it post-auction, thereby withholding the seat from a classmate.
Furthermore, the student did not resolve the conflict during the
auction.
3. Standard point replenishment for the course (1000 points for
1.0cu course).
4. Written permission from the instructor is required to drop the
course (entirely at faculty discretion) and written permission from
the other professor is required to add the alternate section.
*5. If the student does not have an auction point balance of at
least 350 points at the time of the request, the request would be
denied.
