PRINTING TO WHARTON LAB PRINTERS FROM YOUR LAPTOP
You can print to Wharton's lab printers from your laptop if you have a Wharton account.
In order to successfully print, your laptop needs to be running Windows Vista, Windows XP (Professional or Home), or Windows
2000. You will not be able to print from your laptop if you are running a Mac OS or Windows NT, 95, 98, or ME. Please note:
- You must be connected to the Wharton network (Wireless
or Ethernet), to be able to print.
- Print charges still apply when you print from your laptop.
- To check your print balance, please use My Wharton Printing Account.
If you have a computer that is running Windows Vista, you will need to download the Print Server registry file in order to be able to connect to the print server from your laptop. This file will add information to your computer's registry allowing the computer to recognize and connect to the print server. To download this file, please do the following:
Note: If you have a computer that is not running Windows Vista such as Windows XP, you do not need to complete this step, you can skip to Step B. Map to the lab print server.
To download and install the Print Server Registry file, please do the following:
- Direct your web browser to http://consultant.wharton.upenn.edu and sign in using your Wharton username and password.
- From the Support Center screen, click on the Downloads link.
- Click the Windows Vista Lab Print Server Registry File link in the Wharton Lab Print Server section to download the file.
- If you use Internet Explorer, you may receive the following message in your browser's tool bar: "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer, Click here for options..." Click on this message and choose Download File.
- A box will appear asking you if you want to run or save the file. Choose Save and save the file to your computer.
- Once the download is complete, select Run.
- A Registry Editor warning box will appear that asks if you are sure you want to add this information to the registry, select Yes.
After these steps have been completed, the registry file will be successfully installed on your computer.
The first thing you need to do is map a drive to the lab's print server. This authenticates you to the server and is necessary whether
you're printing from your laptop for the first time, or whether you're a returning user. (Alternative to steps 1-11:
Below you will see detailed instructions on mapping the drive. If you've never mapped a drive before, we suggest you follow steps
1-11 at least once so that you're familiar with the procedure by which your laptop connects to the print server. If you are familiar
with drive mapping and prefer a faster (but less transparent) method, you can click
here to download a batch file that will do the mapping for you. You will still have to enter your Wharton username and password.)
- Right-click on the My Computer
icon on your desktop. (Vista or XP users, if you don't have a My Computer
icon on your desktop, you can go to the Start
menu and right-click on the My Computer
icon there, or you can open Windows Explorer and click on the Tools
menu.)

- Choose Map Network Drive...
- Select a drive letter in the Drive:
drop down box. It doesn't matter which letter you choose, as long as the drive is not already in use.
- In the Folder:
box, type \\carson\print
- Make a decision regarding the Reconnect at logon
box:
- If you check this box, your computer will attempt to connect to the lab print server whenever you log on to your laptop. This
means that off-campus, you will receive a message that this connection has failed. When you reconnect your laptop to the Wharton
network, you will need to enter your Wharton password to re-establish the connection to the print server. You will then be able
to print to any lab printer you've added previously without having to remap the drive. If you think you will be printing a lot
from your laptop and don't mind seeing the connection failure messages when you're off-campus, you may want to employ this feature.
- If you do not check this box, you will need to remap the drive the next time you want to print to a lab printer with your laptop.
- Click Connect using a different user name.
A Connect As...
box will open.
- In the User Name:
box, enter wharton\your username
For example, user jwharton would enter wharton\jwharton
- In the Password:
box, enter your Wharton password. (Note: the username and password entered here determine who is billed for printing)
- Click the OK
button to close the Connect As...
box.
- Once the Connect As
box is closed, click the Finish
button on the Map Network Drive
box.
- Once you have mapped the drive, Windows should open up an Explorer window called print on 'Instructional Technology
Systems (carson)'
.
(Windows 2000 users will see print on 'carson'
).
This section assumes you've already mapped to the print server, as detailed in Section A. You only have to add a printer once, so
perform the steps in this section if you want to use a printer you haven't previously used with your laptop. (Returning users: When
you disconnect from the Wharton network, you may notice that the printer remains "installed" on your computer, but is unavailable.
To access it when you reconnect to the Wharton network, you only need to re-map to the print server.)
- If you did not just complete steps 1-11 but accomplished your drive-mapping by another method (either by using the batch file
or by restoring a previous connection at log-on), open your connection to the print server by double-clicking on My
Computer
and then double-clicking on print on 'Instructional Technology Systems (carson)'
(Windows 2000 users: click on print on 'carson'
)
- Double-click on the printer you want to use. (Windows Vista or XP users
: You may see a message You are about to connect to a printer on Carson, which will automatically install a
print driver on your machine. Printer drivers may contain viruses or scripts that can be harmful to your computer. It is important
to be certain that the computer sharing this printer is trustworthy. Would you like to continue?
Click the Yes
button. Windows 2000 users
: You may see the message Before you can use the printer '\\carson\printername', it must be set up on your computer.
Do you want Windows to set up the printer and continue this operation?
Click the Yes
button.)
- You will see a window called Connecting to [printer name] on carson
. It may take a minute or two to complete the connection. Once the connection is complete, a window to the printer's queue will
open. You can close this window.
- You can add as many printers as you want as long as you're mapped to the print server.
Print as you normally would. Simply select the lab printer you want to use from the drop-down list of printers in your print dialog
box.
If you're using a personal firewall on your laptop, you may find that it blocks access to the print server without warning you. To
see if this is the case, shut off your firewall and try again. If you're able to map the drive after shutting your firewall down,
your firewall is blocking access. You need to either shut down your firewall to print, or configure your firewall to recognize and
trust the lab print server.
If you're not using a firewall and you're having trouble mapping to the print server, please contact Wharton's
Computer Consultants with details about the nature of your problem (error messages, etc.).
If you send a job to the printer and it doesn't print immediately, you can check on its status in the printer's queue. Note that
the print queue only displays current or pending jobs - it does not display jobs that have already printed.
- Open Windows Explorer
- Type \\carson\print
in the Address
bar.
- A list of printers should appear. Double-click on the printer you sent the job to. This should open up the printer's queue. (This
assumes you have already installed this printer. If you have not, double-clicking on a printer will install it.)
- If the number in the Size
column next to the job at the top of the list is increasing, the printer is working correctly
- If there is an "Error Printing
" message in the Document Name
column for the top job on the list, try turning the printer off and on to fix the problem. Then choose Restart
from the Document
menu.
- IMPORTANT: If you discover that your print queue is not working, delete your print job from it before you try to print it elsewhere.
Your job will stay in the queue until deleted or actually printed, in which case you will be charged for the job regardless
of when it was printed or whether you picked it up. To delete your job:
- Select your job by clicking on it.
- Click on the Document
menu.
- Select Cancel.
- If the print queue is empty and you can't find your job, first make sure you didn't accidentally send the job to another printer.
Second, understand that when there are no other jobs in the queue, your job should get processed very quickly and will remain
in the queue only for a few seconds. To watch your job's progress, you can open a window to the print queue before
you send your job to it, and watch the print queue as you send your job to the printer. You should be able to see your job appear
in the queue, get processed, and disappear from the queue. If you continue to have trouble, please contact Wharton Computer
Consulting.
