WHARTON EMAIL UPGRADE
As part of our ongoing effort to enhance Wharton's computing services and to respond to student requests for more email storage space, Wharton Computing is performing a major upgrade to our Microsoft Exchange email servers during the week of June 22 - 25. After the upgrade, your Wharton email account will reside on new Microsoft Exchange 2007 servers with a larger storage quota, additional security, and enhanced functionality.
What are the benefits of the new Email server?
The Exchange 2007 email server offers several enhanced features including:
- Larger Account Size:
Student Email accounts now have a size or "quota" limit of 500 MB.
- Scheduling Assistant Improvements:
When scheduling an appointment, the Assistant not only shows times when attendees are busy, it can now suggest times when all attendees are free.
- Out of Office Assistant Improvements:
You can now set an expiration date on a message and you also have the ability to create one message for within your organization and one for outside of it.
- Outlook Web Access:
Webmail has been enhanced to act more like Outlook and provide additional functionality.
- Handheld Device Synchronization:
If you have synchronized your Wharton account on your Windows mobile device, you can now manage it using Webmail. You can view your device's synchronization history and perform a remote wipe of the device if it has been stolen or lost.
What are the options for accessing my email on the new Email server?
Access your email using any of the following options:
- Webmail
To access your email using Outlook Web Access or Webmail, click on the Exchange Mail button in SPIKE. Or, direct your web browser to: https://owa.wharton.upenn.edu
- Reconfigure Your Email Client
If you had previously configured an account in an email program such as Outlook or Thunderbird to access
your Wharton email, you may need to making a few minor reconfiguration changes. Follow the instructions below based on the type of account you setup in your email client:
- Exchange Mode:
If you setup an Exchange account to access
your Wharton email, you may only need to close the program and restart it in order to access your email after the upgrade. However, if you are unable to access your email after restarting, you will need to reconfigure your email program by clicking on the set of instructions that pertain to your email client:
- IMAP Mode:
If you had previously configured an account in an email program in IMAP mode, you will need to update your account to reflect the the new server names to:
Incoming server: owa.wharton.upenn.edu
Outgoing server: owa.wharton.upenn.edu
Or, for detailed instructions on how to configure an IMAP account to access the new email server, please see the IMAP Account section below.
- Configure a new account in an Email Client:
To configure an email client to access your email, you have two options. To get the full functionality of the Exchange server including contact and calendar management, configure an Exchange account. For quick access to your email, you may find that configuring an IMAP account may be more suitable to your needs.
- Exchange Account
Create an Exchange account in Outlook 2007, Outlook 2003 or Entourage to access your email, contacts and calendar. To utilize the enhanced Scheduling and Out of Office Assistant features new to Exchange 2007, use Outlook Web Access or an Exchange account in Outlook 2007.

If you are not interested in taking advantage of the Exchange server's advanced calendaring and contact features, you can configure an IMAP account to access your email quickly.
