    • Choose Safe Senders tab.

Setting Up the Spam Filter

As email is received in a student's account, the spam service reviews the email to determine if it is spam. The service delivers any message detected as spam into a special folder, called Junk E-mail.

The Junk E-Mail folder is created when you first log into your email account using Webmail or Outlook 2003/2007. For most students, this has already been done.
If you have never used Webmail or Outlook 2003/2007 since obtaining your Wharton account, your email will not be filtered by the spam service until you use one of these programs. To activate the service, you will need to access your email through Webmail or Outlook 2003/2007. You will not see the Junk E-Mail folder until you have done this.
After you log into Webmail once, you will be able to see your Junk E-Mail folder in your email program. However, in order to edit the spam service settings such as the blocked sender and approved senders list, you will need to use Webmail or Outlook 2003.

Unsubscribing from the Spam Filter Service

Turn off the Junk Email Filter Option in Webmail by doing the following:

  • Log into Webmail and click the Options button in the left menu pane.
  • On the options page, scroll down to Privacy and Junk E-Mail Protection section.
  • Uncheck the box that says Filter Junk E-Mail.
  • Close the Options page by scrolling up to the top of the page and selecting Save and Close.
Importing Wharton's Safe Senders list

More and more email programs are using Junk mail filters to weed out SPAM. As a result the likelihood of important messages getting caught in your Junk Mail filter increases.

Wharton provides you with a basic list of "Safe Senders" you can upload into your email program.  This list is updated periodically, and updates will be announced when they are ready.

Be sure to include this list in your email configuration so you don't miss critical email.

Safe Senders List FAQ

Why do I need to add a “Safe Senders List” to my mail program?
Mail sent from these addresses is generally important, and often time-sensitive.  If it is routed to your Junk folder you may not see it in time, and it may even be deleted before you see it depending on your junk folder's settings.

How often is the list updated?
Wharton Computing will make every effort to update these lists every semester.  If there is a critical addition to the lists mid-semester, this will be announced.

What are those email addresses I don't recognize. The ones that begin @notify?
Some of the addresses on this list are key parts of the University's emergency notification system.  Please be sure you have registered your email and phone information with them by accessing Penn InTouch via the Penn Portal at: http://www.upenn.edu/penn_portal

Why can't this be done at the server level?
These mailing addresses are allowed through Wharton's servers. However, each individual email program has its own Junk Filter and settings.

Tips on Importing Your Safe Sender list into web-based email programs

Email programs vary in how they handle the identification of Safe Senders.  Look through your program's support material for information on importing safe sender lists for specific information. In general however, importing the list into your contacts is a fairly reliable way to ensure that the mail will be delivered to you safely.

Adding and Blocking Email Addresses to the Sender Lists

The Sender Lists allows you to specify who you would like to receive and not receive email from. Email addresses on the Safe Senders list will always be delivered to your Inbox. Email addresses on the Blocked Senders list are automatically placed in the Junk E-Mail folder. Email sent to addresses or domain names on your Safe Recipients list will always be delivered to your Inbox.

Adding Email Addresses to the Approved Senders List

There are two ways to add an email address to the Safe Senders list.

  • Use Webmail to add email addresses:
    • Launch Webmail and click on the Options button.
    • In the Privacy and Junk E-Mail Prevention section, click on the Manage Junk E-Mail Lists button.
    • Select Safe Senders in the View or Modified List box if it is not already displayed.
    • Click the Add button and type the email address that you want approved in the text box and click OK.
  • Use Outlook 2003 to add email addresses:
    • From the Outlook 2003 Tools menu, select Options.
    • On the Preferences tab, click the Junk E-Mail button in the Email section.
    • Click on the Safe Senders tab.
    • Click the Add button and type the email address that you want approved in the text box and click OK.
  • To remove an email address from the Safe Senders list, select the email address that you want removed and click Remove.

Adding Email Addresses to the Blocked Senders List

There are two ways to add an email address to the Blocked Senders list.

  • Use Webmail to add email addresses:
    • Launch Webmail and click on the Options button.
    • In the Privacy and Junk E-Mail Prevention section, click on the Manage Junk E-Mail Lists button.
    • Select Blocked Senders in the View or Modified List box.
    • Click the Add button and type the email address that you want approved in the text box and click OK.
  • Use Outlook 2003 to add email addresses:
    • From the Outlook 2003 Tools menu, select Options.
    • On the Preferences tab, click the Junk E-Mail button in the Email section.
    • Click on the Blocked Senders tab.
    • Click the Add button and type the email address that you want approved in the text box and click OK.
  • To remove an email address from the Blocked Senders list, select the email address that you want removed and click Remove.

Adding Email Addresses to the Safe Recipients List

There are two ways to add an email address or domain name to the Safe Recipients list.

  • Use Webmail to add email addresses or a domain name:
    • Launch Webmail and click on the Options button.
    • In the Privacy and Junk E-Mail Prevention section, click on the Manage Junk E-Mail Lists button.
    • Select Safe Recipients in the View or Modified List box if it is not already displayed.
    • Click the Add button and type the email address that you want approved in the text box and click OK.
  • Use Outlook 2003 to add email addresses or a domain name:
    • From the Outlook 2003 Tools menu, select Options.
    • On the Preferences tab, click the Junk E-Mail button in the Email section.
    • Click on the Safe Recipients tab.
    • Click the Add button and type the email address that you want approved in the text box and click OK.
  • To remove an email address from the Safe Recipients list, select the email address that you want removed and click Remove.

Examples of Safe Recipients that some students may want to consider adding to their list include:

  • Class Mailing Lists: Adding you class mailing list (eg: whg07@wharton.upenn.edu) will help insure that you get all the neccessary emails addressed to your class.
  • Wharton Domain: Adding @wharton.upenn.edu as a safe recipient will help ensure that any email sent to an @wharton address will be delivered to your Inbox.
Please Note: Keep in mind that if you decide to add the Wharton domain to your list, forged spam emails may be delivered to your Inbox that appear to be coming from a Wharton address.

Tips for using Wharton's Spam Service
  • Make sure to check the email in your Junk E-Mail folder on a regular basis. The service may catch legitimate emails that you need.
  • If an email is placed in the Junk E-Mail folder that is legitimate, simply highlight it and click the button that says Not Junk. It will then be delivered to your Inbox.
  • In order to see the junk e-mail folder in another email program such as Outlook XP or 2000, you will need to access your email account in Webmail first.

Outlook Spam Filtering Service

In addition to Wharton's spam filtering service, Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2003 provide users with its own spam filtering service. This service can work along with Wharton's service but only while your copy of Outlook is running..

By default, Outlook's spam service is enabled and set to Low which moves only "the most obvious junk e-mail to the Junk E-Mail folder". However, you can choose from no automatic protection, low, high, or safe lists only. You will find a description of each potential level when you view the spam service settings.

To view or change the Outlook spam service settings, do the following:

  • From the Outlook Tools menu, select Options.
  • On the Preferences tab, click the Junk E-Mail button in the Email section.
  • Make sure the Options tab is selected and choose the level of filtering you want by clicking the button next to it.
  • Apply and OK to save the changes.

Note: Outlook's spam service settings are located on the Options tab in the Junk Email section. Any settings changes that are made on the options tab will not affect how Wharton's spam service manages the spam in your Wharton account. The options tab settings will only affect your email account while your copy of Outlook is running. The other three tabs in the Junk E-Mail section, safe senders, safe recipients and block senders, do affect Wharton's spam service. Any changes made to these tabs will be saved on the Wharton email server and will affect your account when you access your email through other programs such as Webmail.
