Blackberry Configuration Instructions

This page provides instructions for syncing your Wharton Calendar, Contacts and Tasks with your Blackberry device. Also included at the bottom of the page is information on how Blackberry users can work with their service provider to have their email pushed to their device.

Step 1: Install the Blackberry Desktop Redirector

Install the Blackberry Desktop Redirector software by doing the following:

  1. Insert the Blackberry Desktop Software CD and start the install. Accept all the defaults.
  2. At the '(Email) Integration Options’ screen, choose the ‘Integrate with a Personal (Internet) account ’ option and click Next.
  3. Accept the rest of the defaults.

Step 2: Specify Connection and Profile Settings in the Desktop Manager

Once the Redirector software has been installed, you need to specify the connection and profile settings in the Desktop Manager by doing the following:

  1. Run the Desktop Manager program and connect your Blackberry to your computer.
If it does not recognize that the Blackberry is connected, select Options from the Desktop Manager, then choose Connection Settings, you can either click Detect or choose USB from the pull down menu.  It should then detect the Blackberry and say it’s connected.
  2. From the Desktop Manager Options menu choose Profile Settings and make sure the correct Outlook Profile name is selected.
This is the Profile that the Blackberry will use when syncing.  (If you have Outlook running when you plug in the Blackberry, it should automatically prompt you for the Outlook Profile to use).

Step 3: Configure Synchronization Settings

To configure the Synchronization settings for your Blackberry, follow the steps below:

  1. From the Desktop Manager, launch the Synchronize progam. Iit should look similar to the picture below. Make sure the ‘Synchronize organizer data’ and ‘Update device’s time and date’ options are checked off.

  2. Next click the Configuration Tab.  The screen should look something like below:

  3. Click the 'Configure synch’ button to choose which Outlook applications you wish to sync with your Blackberry.

  4. Next click the check box next to the applications you want to sync, one at a time, then the Choose button and select MS Outlook from the list of applications. The list of apps should look like the picture below:

Do this for the Address Book, Calendar and Tasks. Don ’t check off the Memo option.  Make sure Synchronize is selected in the Operations box (it should be by default).

If all this looks good, and the Blackberry is being recognized by the desktop software, you are now ready to sync the device with Outlook.

Step 4: Synchronize Your Calendar, Contacts and Tasks

To synchronize your calendar, contacts and tasks, first make sure your Blackberry is plugged into your computer and Outlook is running. Then, select the Synchronize tab, and click the Synchronize Now button to start the sync of the Blackberry with Outlook. You may be prompted to accept or deny any changes for each Outlook application. You can view the change(s) to see if it’s what you want.

If you want the sync to automatically happen when the Blackberry is plugged into the machine, you can set this option by selecting ‘Automatic Synchronization’ option on the Synchronize tab.

Pushing Email to A Blackberry Device

Most Blackberry service providers have Push technology available which allows their users to push their email to their Blackberry device. If you are interested in pushing your email to your Blackberry device, you should contact your service provider. You will need to go to the provider's website and register your Wharton email address. Once this is done, your email will be ‘pushed’ to your Blackberry.  The registration links for the major service providers are below.
