Configuring Microsoft Outlook on your Windows Mobile Device

If you plan on checking your email on your wireless enabled Windows Mobile device, there are 3 options you can choose from. The first is Webmail, which is available to Wharton students who have email accounts. Once you are connected to the Internet, direct your browser to http://owa.wharton.upenn.edu. Secondly, you can sync your mobile device with Microsoft Outlook on your personal computer. Syncing instructions can be found in your device's documentation. Finally, you can configure Pocket Outlook on your handheld device to check email while accessing Wharton's Wireless Network by following the steps below.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook on a Windows Mobile device

Depending on what version of the operating system your device has installed on it, some of the configuration steps may slightly vary from those listed below.

  • From the Start menu on your device, select Programs.
  • Select Activesync.
  • In the Activesync window, select Menu (Menu is located in the bottom right corner of the screen) and then select Add Server Source. This will take you through a wizard for creating an email service. Enter the following information in the appropriate screens:
    • For Server Address enter: owa.wharton.upenn.edu.
Check the box next to This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection. Click Next.
    • Next, Enter the following information in the corresponding boxes:
      • Username: Wharton username
      • Password: Wharton password
      • Domain: Wharton
Note: If you wish to enable auto-sync, check the box next to Save Password. If you decide not to choose this option, you will be required to enter your password when connecting to your email account.
      Click Next.
    • Select which items you would like to sync by placing a check in that item's box. The options include: Contacts, Calendar, E-mail, Tasks
Note: The Calendar option offers individual settings for how far back to sync items.
    • Click Finish to complete the wizard.

When the wizard has been completed, A connection to the server will be established and the items you selected (contacts, calendar, e-mail, tasks) will be updated and synchronized.

Accessing Wharton Email from your Pocket PC

    • Now that the setup is complete, you can now access your email. To do this:
      • Click on the Start menu and select Messaging.
      • In the top left hand corner under the Start menu, click on the dropdown box.
      • Find the Wharton service and click on the plus sign in front of it to expand the list of folders.
      • Select Inbox.
    • To log into your email account:
      • Click the Connect icon on the bottom toolbar (the icon that has the hand holding a handheld device). This will connect you to your Wharton email.
      • If you did not opt to save your password, you will be prompted to enter it here.
    • After you are connected, Outlook will synchronize your email account, updating your mail folders. The very first time you connect to Outlook, the synchronization process may take a little while.
    • To log out of Outlook, simply click on the Connect icon on the bottom toolbar. This will disconnect you from your email service.
