WHARTON'S WIRELESS NETWORK

Wharton's wireless network is part of the Penn's Wireless Network which provides students with easy access to the wireless network all across campus. Penn's Wireless Network gives you high speed, ethernet access to the Internet from your own laptop, notebook computer or wireless handheld device without the need for a network cable or a wall jack.

Accessing the AirPennNet Wireless Network

Penn's AirPennNet wireless network is available in Jon M. Huntsman Hall and several areas around Penn's campus. AirPennNet can by accessed by laptop computers running Windows XP or Vista, Linux or a Macintosh operating system.

Note: If you have a handheld computer/pda or a computer that is running a 64 bit operating system, you will not be able to connect to the AirPennNet wireless network. Instead, please follow the instructions in the Alternate Wireless Network Configuration Settings section below to gain access to the wireless network at Wharton.

There is no preregistration needed to access the AirPennNet wireless network. With a few configuration steps, you will be ablet o connect to it. The configuration steps are as follows:

  • Download and configure Secure W2 from Penn's website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/product/specs/securew2.html.
Note: During the Secure W2 configuration steps, an authentication box will appear asking for your username and password. You should enter your Pennkey information and leave the Domain field blank.
  • After completing the Secure W2 configuration, reboot your computer.

Macintosh Computer Users: Macintosh users do not need to download the Secure W2 client. All that is required to access AirPennNet is to configure your computer for 802.1X authentication. For information on how to do this, please see Penn's computing website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/air-pennnet/macosx.html/

For more information on the AirPennNet wireless network, please the Penn computing website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/air-pennnet/

For questions regarding the AirPennNet wireless network, please see the AirPennNet Frequently Asked Questions section of Penn's computing website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/air-pennnet/faq.html

Alternate Wireless Network Configuration Settings

If you have a laptop computer running a 64 bit operating system or a handheld computer/pda that has the ability to connect to an 8.02.11x wireless network, you will not be able to connect to the AirPennNet wireless network mentioned above. Instead, to gain access to the wireless network at Wharton, you will need to follow these instructions:

  • Add whnowire in the SSID/network name section of your wireless card configuration utility if it is not already there.
  • Launch an SSL capable web browser.
  • Enter your PennKey username and password when prompted.

If you need additional information on how to complete these steps, see the Penn Computing website at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/wireless-pennnet/.

Note: You will need to launch a web browser and enter your Pennkey information everytime you want to access the Wireless network. This means that before you use Outlook, you will need to authenticate to the network by launching a web browser and enter your Pennkey information.

Trouble Connecting to the Wireless Network

Some students have reported that they occassionally cannot connect to the Wireless network in Jon M. Huntsman Hall. These students have encountered the following symptoms when attempting to connect:

  • Were previously successful in accessing the Wireless network.
  • The computer's wireless card displays they are connected to whnowire (Wharton's wireless network name) with full signal strength and they receive an IP address.
  • Unable to authenticate to the network through the Penn wireless webpage.

If you have experienced this problem, please help us investigate this problem further by providing some details of your experience. Please fill out our wireless troubleshooting form online at: http://apps.wharton.upenn.edu/wireless/.

If you are experiencing problems connecting to the wireless network that do not seem to be the same as the problems above, please contact the Wharton computer consultants for additional support at http://consultant.wharton.upenn.edu.
